The intricacies of right and wrong behaviour

We are bogged down by job/relationships and have to behave a certain way.The way i like most is casual way of life where we pull pranks ,make fun and laugh .But the professional growth overtime makes you to be more circumspect. I was pondering this with a friend , whether my being this cool manager(aren't i assuming too much :D) who jokes and laughs with team undermine my value as decision maker? She said as long as we know where to draw a fine line we can be ourselves. But, somehow i had to overtime tone down my humor and casual attitude(commenting too much) , as it seemed to really bring down how i was perceived as a person. Its been few months when i have been handed over the responsibility of managing a team. Its been fun so far ,but i now understand when to speak and when to keep silent. With responsibility comes lot of behavioral changes, we not only to respect people but equally respect their thoughts and ideas irrespective of whether we agree or not with them.
Same is the case with management on the higher up, sometimes we argue and fence but ultimately its a professional platform and we have to discuss and sort out differences. Sometimes we have to agree to disagree. We cannot really keep a grudge and expect to progress professionally , else we will get stuck in one place. This gets tough when things are on moral and ethical grounds . Atleast  i don't think i can support someone who is unethical. Now , we cannot associate politics with ethics, both are two different things. This is a tricky situation where taking a moral high ground doesn't help. But, so far i haven't faced such a situation so i can't really empathize.
This again is something which applies to personal relationships. With a few friends and family we can scream and curse and rant and rave. But ultimately there is a rule book of how not to behave etc...We definitely can't cross that, if we want to retain friends and family circle.Over the time its about being yourself but respecting people. Also, being stern when you see injustice!!
