We had a women's day session on this topic and then few more sessions. While i had quoted on able to make it work in past.Lately i have been going through high load at work and load at home too.How do we really balance it ? I am one of those perfectionist who likes things to fall in their place. But with handling a smaller to a much bigger team meant a new strategy in life.Though i have one of the best people working in my team, it still need extended focus which gets exhausting.I went and hired a cook for evening where i could focus on the calls i had to attend. Also, the influx of guests at home didnot create extra work as i had already outsourced it to the cook.I had to figure a way to go office in the heat , which was cab or metro based on the time.
Then i had guests coming and going at home.I initially tried to please everyone and overdo few things. Then i realized, its upto me to set the expectations with anyone. The more you give , the more is asked, thats karma for you.I also started to go through the emails while drinking my morning tea.It puts less pressure when i reach office, less stress on thinking what is in my inbox today. I downloaded Kindle on my mobile, read it while travelling to office and caught up on few books.I have read 9 books so far this year! Not bad considering having busiest work pattern of my career and busy time at home with guests etc..I completely stopped watching crap on TV.I have developed an allergy where i cannot watch useless stuff even if i am sitting in front of TV.Thats called self control :P
I also walk around the floor in office when i get fed up by sitting by myself. We need to take 5 minutes breaks to allow our brain to work faster.Sometimes there are times when people and situation are not in control, it happens, i have learnt to get over these. The main topic which came out of it was , men being unhelpful generally. I do agree to some extent, even if i am a CIO of a company, many household responsibility will lie on me.Men do get away with lot less responsibility be it east or west. That's something build over centuries so will remain so for centuries.Instead of cribing about it, i prefer to take some action to reduce it.
Women also need to learn to put themselves first in life, there is tendency to think of "we" "us" ,which is good. But,sometimes it should be "me" time. There is no balance , its just we have to try and work through it and balance it.
